You Don’t Need To Be An Accountant To Have An Accountancy Qualification
An understanding of the nuts and bolts of finance and its associated areas can be very beneficial in all kinds of jobs in many different industries and sectors. An educated awareness of financial matters and a rudimentary grasp of accounting fundamentals such as budgeting, risk and performance can not only differentiate non-financial managers from their peers but enable fuller engagement with accounting colleagues and lead to all-around better decision making. Many of the major accounting bodies, such as CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants In England And Wales) and the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) offer financial management courses and accountancy qualification courses for non-financial managers.
CIMA’s Certificate in Business Accounting, the ICAEW’s Certificate in Finance Business and Accounting (CFAB) together with the ACCA’s Diploma in Financial Management qualification all cater for those individuals who need a working knowledge of finance but not necessarily a full-blown professional accounting qualification. As an example, the CFAB is focused specifically towards entrants with no proevious academic qualification and from a very broad range of working backgrounds. Its syllabus is very wide, taking in subjects such as business and finance, law, assurance and the principles of taxation and, if needs be, can lead on to the ACA professional qualification.
The Diploma in Financial Management provided by the ACCA is of a similar nature. It also has very flexible entry requirements, being open to those with a degree, higher national certificate/diploma, a non-accounting professional qualification or even relevant work experience. It is a modular course and can be undertaken from home or classroom on either a full or part-time basis and there is no time limit for its completion. The syllabus takes in four main subject areas: 1) The Interpretation of Financial Statements, which develops an appreciation of financial information in the public domain and the regulation that underlies it; 2) Performance Management, looking at how to measure and manage business performance; 3) Financial Strategy, providing an understanding strategy's role in investment as well as finance and resource allocation; and 4) Risk management which deals with the theory of corporate governance. It is assessed through two three hour exams and two projects. High quality, easily accessible and highly useful financial management courses are readily available and you don’t need to be an accountant to get one.
