How to clean rust and debris out of a laptop power jack?
My laptop charger got wet at one point and was put into the laptop (power jack) and parts are visibly rusted now. The connection is alright and it is charging fairly well. But the laptop heats up really bad and sometimes when removing the charger, the metal tip is extremely hot, unable to touch. How do I clean the inside of the laptop without ruining it? Alcohol? Vinegar?
alcohol will not hurt it (use IPA from computer or electronics hobby shop) - but I doubt that will shift any rust buildup.
it is no big deal to buy a new power socket on Ebay, and find somebody with a soldering iron who can fit it for you - I did this once and it was not a quick job, due to all the casing screws to remove, and some dismantling to be done, but it was not at all hard to do.
while you have it all apart, you can also clean out any fluff buildup in the cooling system, which may be aggravating your overheat problem.
