Getting The Right Hardware Is Crtitcal

1) Plan for the Future

How many times have you heard ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’? It's an oversight that perhaps we are all guilty of making more regularly than we'd like to admit! That said, it isn't just our own decision making that can let us down every now and then. Theoretically, even equipment capable of 99.99% uptime will lose service for almost 53 minutes over the course of a year! Conducting a review of how this kind of downtime may impact on your business is extremely worthwhile, as is formulating a contingency plan ahead of time; it's even more relevant when the equipment in question is being implemented in mission critical tasks or applications. Additionally, making allowances for future expansion plans or a change in needs when designing and purchasing your network can reduce the need for expensive alterations to be made later on. For instance, many refurbished Cisco switches sourced by ICP Ltd every day feature Power Over Ethernet  (PoE) capability, which is used to power IP Telephony handsets directly from the appliance. A a variety of high-speed fibre uplinks may also be present.
By keeping one eye on what your future requirements might be, the potential benefits of specifying features such as these can be huge, even if they are not required at the time. When ordering appliances close to their End Of Life (EoL) announcement, this becomes even more pertinent.

2) Hold a cold spare for mission critical applications

Safeguarding mission critical applications, and ensuring that a network is sufficiently resilient, is understandably top priority for many network administrators. Here, for instance, is a basic illustration: A sales team of fifty employees, who are each paid £10 an hour, require the constant availability of a specific networking appliance to maintain their ability to work. Should the use of this appliance be lost for just one business day, the cost of lost productivity may start at almost £4000 in wages alone! Many choose to purchase a service or support contract with the manufacturer or a third party provider to shield themselves from the effects of such a scenario. On many occasions, this is a completely rational precaution. Over the last nine years, we've been proud to offer with a trusted and well established channel partner to provide exactly this type of service. However, when manufacturers and distributors make taking out such a contract a condition of purchase, or withhold certain aspects of functionality (such as operating system upgrades, for example) from non-service contract holding customers, there is really only one explanation for such a practice: For the service provider, this is regarded as a reliable stream of income. There may also be additional delays associated with the dispatch of the replacement parts or engineers required to get the failed network operational again. To help facilitate the quick restoration of service in the event of the principal unit’s failure, time and money can be saved through the purchase of one or two additional units or spare parts, hold in reserve.

3)  Reduce your reliance on ‘new’ equipment

Whether you're buying a new car or just hitting the sales, nothing beats the feeling of buying 'new'. However, that’s probably why buying ‘new’ product is generally so expensive, with the costs associated with doing so all too often proving prohibitive to new start-ups and established business alike. Business Link, a UK government internet resource for SMBs, recommends 'leasing goods or buying them second hand' as one possible response, 'as part as part of a range of simple cost control systems that can be applied to identify scope for savings.” Calculating what the depreciation in the value of new equipment will be over any period of time can be a disquieting experience, so this is good advice. What's more, simply open the box of a new product and this process of depreciation begins in earnest. Accordingly, many companies have increasingly taken advantage of the significant cost savings (not to mention reductions in delivery lead-times) that can be gained through purchasing refurbished equipment. This has been shown to be especially relevant when a particular appliance is close to end of life (EoL) Unfortunately for previous owner, second users only stand to gain from the effects of depreciation on the initial purchase price.

4)  Time for an IT asset refresh? Redeploy elsewhere or quickly realise the value in unwanted assets.

On many occasions, surplus or unwanted switches and routers can often be usefully redeployed in other departments of the business. But if redeployment is not practical or possible, it makes sense to realise their value straight away; networking equipment can be quickly superseded by updated models. Residual values in such items can diminish quickly for a variety of reasons. So, in short, if you can’t use it, it often makes sense to lose it!  sell cisco router ICP Ltd’s friendly team of purchasing specialist can quickly guide you in ascertaining what the residual value of your decommissioned or unwanted stock may be.

5) Check pricing of manufacturer refurbished stock carefully

Over recent years, some manufacturers have chosen to question the value offered by the second user market to SMBs . However, it appears that recent constraints on consumer budgets and their own supply chains, to say nothing of the increased prioritisation of environmental issues shown by all parties over recent year, have convinced many of the benefits that offering refurbished equipment alongside new product can bring to the end-user. However, be careful. Regardless of the current market value, the manufacturer of the appliance in question may only offer a fixed discount from their own RRP (recommended retail price) Therefore, a disproportionately small return on investment can follow a deceptively large financial outlay when the time comes to refresh the inventory. Although in their infancy, expect to see more manufacturers develop their official manufacturer refurbished programs  further. Many will see them as a perfect method for disposing of returned or repaired equipment in an environmentally sensitive way, but still returning an acceptable margin. But cheaper, more responsive and tailored solutions that put the customer, and not the manufacturer, first are available elsewhere. And we should know; we’ve be offering them for nearly ten years!

6) Trade in when purchasing new equipment.

There are times when, for a variety of reasons, only products in ‘new’ condition can be accepted. It’s why we worked hard to become a Cisco SMB partner, for instance. used cisco equipment So, while the costs attached to purchasing new equipment can be considerable, it is important to remember that it’s a competitive market-place, with many suppliers willing to work hard to secure your custom. Therefore, why not use your unwanted assets to leverage a better deal when purchasing new equipment, by proposing a trade-in against the value of the new equipment? Many suppliers, including ICP Ltd, will be happy to work with you on such a basis, thereby helping you make your budget go further by acquiring new equipment through the re-sale of unwanted, surplus equipment.

7) Lies, damned lies and logistics!

Considering that any delay can lead to valuable relationships with valued customers being placed under unnecessary strain, being let down on a delivery schedule must rank as one of the most frustrating occurrences you can face. For example, in a recent study by eConsultancy.com, conducted to assess the impact of the last year’s unusually adverse winter weather conditions on logistics in the UK, 28% of respondents said that they would not purchase from a supplier that failed to deliver on time in the future! Can you be sure that all of your suppliers and their carriers understand the importance of ensuring that your goods arrive on time, every time? To help achieve this, try to obtain a tracking reference number at the point of ordering; having this information quickly and easily available to hand enables you to keep your client or purchasing team fully informed on the progress of the delivery in question. This can also help you ascertain that the equipment being quoted is actually held in stock and available for immediate dispatch! Many suppliers, such as ICP Ltd, make extensive use of the wide range of timed and same-day delivery and collection services which are offered by almost all of the principal carriers. Although such services will be more expensive than standard delivery services, the small premium they incur can often be the difference between a satisfied customer and the premature end of a successful business relationship.

8) Buy tested equipment

By insisting and ensuring that any equipment being purchased is both stringently tested prior dispatch and covered under warranty after the sale, significant amounts of time and expense can be saved in the future should it fail. All products supplied by us are, where possible, serialised for accountability. They are also tested all prior to shipment  and secure packing for reliability. We also have a suite of web-tools to ensure that, in the unlikely event that any product supplied by ICP Ltd is found to be Dead On Arrival (DOA) or should prove to be faulty during our standard warranty period, a replacement is swiftly dispatched. Your supplier should provide the terms and conditions of their standard warranty provision on any formal quotation, or invoice.

9) Original product vs OEM vs Third Party: Which one do you choose?

For some users, 100% compatible equipment manufactured by third parties is unacceptable, even if this forgoes the large cost savings associated with purchasing such equipment over Manufacturer’s Original product. But why do this? One possible explanation centres round the issue of counterfeiting, incidences of which, while still mercifully rare, are unfortunately on the increase, in terms of frequency, scale and sophistication. We, like any other reputable supplier, treat this matter very seriously. We have observed the codes of conduct laid out by trade organisations such as the ASCDI and UNEDA since our foundation in 2002 and our membership of various manufacturers’ own Authorised Partner programs also serves as an indication of our ‘zero tolerance’ counterfeiting policy. Secondly, the conditions of service accompanying a manufacturer’s service contract or warranty can dictate that only original manufacturers’ products are used when purchasing updates or accessories. Or it is in the mistaken belief that all of a manufacturer's products are in fact physically made by them.
In fact, many ‘official’ products, such as transceivers, Hard Drives and memory upgrades, are not physically made by the manufacturers themselves, but by third parties. By considering all of these factors carefully, it's possible to find the correct balance between economy and security

10) know your supplier.

The frequent and informal exchange of advice and transferable expertise has been fittingly described as the 'glue' that binds an efficient supply chain together. Therefore, be sure to engage regularly with your supplier, involving them wherever possible at all stages of the design, quotation and ordering process. Frequently, pre-sales discussions are a good opportunity to pick-up useful information and opinion Before choosing your supplier, ascertain the
