There are actually some advantages to tanning your skin. For one, the sun helps things such as acne and other related problems clear up, and many find tan-skin to be aesthetically pleasing. It is also the case, however, that sun damage is something of an issue and should be kept in the minds of those who like to sunbathe as the drawbacks of doing so may be worse than the benefits.
Premature ageing is one risk of sunbathing too much without protection. For those who do find it to be a cosmetic enhancement, it can be quite a worry since the process of sunbathing here could turn out to be counter-productive. The skin thins and wrinkles are developed due the the UVA rays. Skin cancer, however, is probably the biggest known risk of sun damage.
The cells damaged by the sun always run the risk of becoming cancerous later. Even having sunburn once can double the risk of you developing cancer so it is definitely worth keeping this in mind. Even after the burnt skin has peeled away and the fresh layer appears to be healthy, there is still a risk. A possible sign of skin cancer is the development of new moles which can go unnoticed, so it is important to look out for these if you spend a long time out in the sun.
Unusual skin growth will, of course, be a cause for concern, although they are more noticeable. There are measures that can be taken to help prevent the effects of damage such as factor 15 sunblock which will be useful when you are outside for a while.
Another method is to cover up well by wearing sunglasses, t-shirts and hats in order to keep your skin safe without becoming too warm. Hats are particularly useful as they shade your face and neck, which are particularly sensitive areas.
Since the sun will be less harsh later in the day, it can be a good idea to sunbathe then, instead. There will be fewer ultra violet rays this way.
